I just unwrapped a copy of my chair for practice. Previously, I'd only unwrapped a model once and it was pretty simple. This was considerably more complex, took an hour and was frustrating but over all it was a great learning experience.

I came up with some rough shots that I want to be in my final animation.

One reveals some problems with my rigging. Apparently, it breaks when I turn the chair upside down.

Here's my desk going from sad and shlumpy to eager and proper.

This is my progress on rigging my chair. I have it so all the wheels/accesories move in unison but it broke when I tried to makes the wheels roll using bone constraints. I will add a scan of my bone breakdown later (there's no documentation for office chair rigging so I pretty much had to work from scratch and car rig tutorials)

It's All Coming Together...

OK, so we had a class critique on our models but there was only time for one good hint to get shouted out before we moved on to the next thing. Later, at a party, a friend told me that my chair was very "chairee."

Well, crud.

I realized that I'd over done one aspect of my project and none of my objects had any personality! That just won't due so I've redone the chair and I'm in the process of redoing the desk.

The buttons might be a little too much "cake" but I'll wait to make a decision until after I've done some texturing.

Also, I've come up with a shape language.
Squares are science stuff.
Squares with rounded edges and comfort objects.
Triangles are debris and decay.

I'm thinking my color scheme will be red and green. I've always loved movies with a thoughtful color pallet. Here's a great example from the movie Amelie.

Turntables

These are some of the models I've been working on.

This is a real work in progress:

This is a good video example of how I want to treat the objects when they come to life. It's very simple: the shape of the object doesn't change, the objects move similar to how the would in reality, and there's no talking. Everything is communicated through gestures, the angle of the camera, and the music.

I've done some real life research by visiting the Texas A&M Surplus Supplies warehouse and my local burnt down building. Here's some of the results.
